20. YALDA United Nations ECOSOC Status
The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) has been the main entry point into the UN system for NGOs. ECOSOC remains the only main UN body with a formal framework for NGO participation. It is the principal organ that coordinates the economic, social and related work of the 14 United Nations specialized agencies, functional commissions and five regional commissions. It serves as the central forum for discussing international economic and social issues, and for formulating policy recommendations addressed to Member States and the United Nations system.
The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) has granted YALDA with Special Consultative Status. Consultative Status enables YALDA to actively engage with ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, as well as with the United Nations Secretariat, programmes, funds, and agencies in a number of ways. The work of the Council is conducted through several sessions and preparatory meetings, round tables and panel discussions with members of civil society throughout the year.
As Special Consultative Status members with ECOSOC, there are many privileges and benefits provided to YALDA:
- Provide expert analysis on issues directly from our experience in the field;
- Allows YALDA to be informed about the provisional agenda of ECOSOC;
- Attend meetings and access to the United Nations with the valid grounds passes;
- Serve as an early warning agents;
- Help raise public awareness of relevant issues;
- Submit written and oral statements at ECOSOC;
- Play a major role in advancing United Nations goals and objectives;
- Opportunity to consult with ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies such as other NGOs with status;
- Use of United Nations facilities;
- Organize side events;
YALDA is very proud of its status with the UN and it is important that our organization remains active as it is a great opportunity to learn, participate, network, lobby, and expand. ECOSOC provides us the opportunity to be heard by a truly global audience and contribute to its agenda.
As the United Nations Headquarters is in New York, YALDA US coordinates and facilitates the relationship between the United Nations and YALDA. As such, if your branch is interested in attending a meeting at the United Nations you must contact YALDA US in order to facilitate passes and get further information on the process. We are also working on setting up a coordination mechanism between YALDA Oxford and the UN in Geneva and YALDA branches in Kenya and the UN in Kenya.
Please note that YALDA is NOT considered part of the United Nations system. As such, we are not representatives or staff of the United Nations, nor are we authorized to enter into business arrangements on behalf of the United Nations, or misuse the name or logo for endorsement of an organization’s activities in any way. Furthermore, our consultative status does not entitle NGOs any privileges such as tax exemptions, diplomatic passports, travel privileges, etc.
